Eastern Shore after Hurricane Isabel - September 2003
Here's another set of pictures from 2003. A couple days after returning
from
Ireland, we had planned to go over to
the
Eastern Shore of
Maryland and
Chincoteague
Island.
Of course, we hadn't planned on there being a
hurricane
that weekend!
Our trip was planned for Sep 20, and the hurricane hit land on the
19th.
Here's just a couple of pics of the nice driving wind and rain at my
place. It wasn't too bad there, just a really strong storm.
The Eastern shore was another matter entirely. On the way across the
bay bridge, all of the marinas were just jumbled up piles of boats, and
a lot of the homes were still surrounded by standing water. The power
was also out for most of the shore, which proved a bit of a problem
when we wanted to eat (most of the restaurants were closed).
When we went out to the beach, it was just incredible. The place had
been totally blasted by the wind. The first few pics below are of
the road and parking lots, which were buried under at least a foot of
sand (maybe even two!). All of the beach grass was squashed flat into
the sand, the shells on the beach were all broken, and there was all
kinds of great stuff washed up on shore. The birds were loving it.
It was still a nice place to visit. I'll have to go back some time when
there aren't any hurricanes around :)
This was the view from our rental place.
