Boroughbridge and Aldborough

I have a book called "Historic Walks in North Yorkshire."  It lists a bunch of 1/2 day to full day walks that
take you past or through various historic sites in the area.

On March 20,  I went on the walk around Boroughbridge, a small town about 10 miles NE of Harrogate. It
also included part of Aldborough, a village that grew up on the site of a Roman town, Isurium

The walk started out on a trail that went along side some farms and the River Ure. All of the trees were
still leafless, they don't start coming out until May or so. There were two large groups of walkers out at the
same time.

You could see this big house just
across the river. It looked like it has
a nice garden.

After a while, the path hooked into a road that went into Aldborough.  There is a nice church there, that
apparently is built partly of stone from the Roman town.  It had the requisite church graveyard with
tilting tombstones that is probably nice and creepy at night.

The main reason that I went to Aldborough was the English Heritage site for the Roman town.
It is located just within the Roman city walls. They have some nice floor mosaics that are
probably from a villa. They also have uncovered some parts of the city walls themselves.

After Aldborough, the route led back to Boroughbridge, to see the Devil's Arrows. (site 2)
(There are tons more sites about these rocks) These are some megalithic standing stones
on the edge of town. One is actually in someone's front yard and the others are in a farmer's field.
The tall one is supposedly the second tallest stone-age monolith in Britain, taller than anything at
Stonehenge.  There used to be a fourth stone, but it was pulled down a few hundred years ago. It
supposedly makes up part of a bridge in town.
