Eastern Europe trip (September 2006) last part!
Day 7&8 - Back to Prague
Here it is at last, the final installment in my first trip to Eastern
Europe.
We left Vienna pretty early in the morning, and then spent most of the
day on the bus. The two cities are only about 180 miles apart which I
found a little odd. It's incredible to have such a huge change in
culture and language in such a short distance. Of course it makes
perfect sense if you take cars out of the picture.
Anyway, we arrived back in Prague around 3pm, and checked back into the
same Hotel. This time they gave me some kind of honeymoon suite or
something. Diggin the pink bed!
That evening, the group went on a dinner cruise on the
Vltava river, which
runs through Prague. There are tons of these boats that all look pretty
much the same. They slowly cruise up and down the river while the
tourists get served a buffet dinner on board. The food wasn't too bad,
and it was pretty scenic, although a lot of time was spent navigating a
couple of locks. We got some good views of the Charles Bridge
from underneath, and some of the buildings were lit up nicely after
dark. I tried to take a couple of still pictures, but it was too dark
(as you can see below).
So, I took some movies, and stuck them together:
Big version (35MB - divx)
Small version (3MB - wmv)
The next morning, we had a couple of hours to kill before the flight
out, so they dropped us off downtown.. I wanted to get some more
pictures of the buildings around the old city square, since they
weren't like anything I'd seen in the other cities. They're all
different ages and styles, colors etc. Awesome.
Look out for the vicious Russian dolls!
Finally, I've got a quick 360 movie of the old town square, to give a
feel for how everything connects together:
Big version (9MB - divx)
Small version (1MB - wmv)
All in all it was a pretty cool trip. I was able to see a ton of
different places in a short time, and got some ideas of where to go in
the future. It was fascinating to see how much the culture could change
in a just a couple hours drive. This was my first overnight group trip
as well, and it wasn't as bad as I had thought. It was a little
annoying having a tight schedule sometime, but they allowed enough free
time to see what I wanted to see.
So, until next time, Na shledanou, Viszontlatasra, and Auf
Wiedersehen...
