Holyroodhouse - Edinburgh - Aug 2005

This was part of my Edinburgh trip last summer.

Edinburgh is a pretty cool town, and it's just crazy in August.
There are several music/arts festivals during this month. When we
were there, the Fringe Festival was in full swing. This is a monthlong
festival of independant theatre and music, from all around Europe.

What this means is that the city is packed with tourists, and hotels
are REALLY expensive. We had to stay in a town about 60 miles
away (Glenrothes) to get an affordable room.

So the first day, we decided to check out the lower half of the
Royal mile. This is the old main street of Edinburgh, which now
connects Edinburgh Castle with Holyroodhouse. Holyroodhouse is
the official residence of the Queen in Scotland, but they have a
large part of the castle open for tourists.

It's a pretty good tour, with the headphones and all.
There were some interesting bits with Mary, Queen of Scots, who
lived here for a while. As with most
castles, no photos were allowed inside, so I just have pictures of
the outside and the grounds. There is an old abbey next to the
castle, that was never rebuilt after a hurricane damaged it in the 18th century.

Deserted train station
(It was Sunday morn)

Fountain

It had cool carvings,
but was turned off.

I'm not sure what
tartan the attendants
wore...

That's Arthur's Seat in
the background

If I remember,
this was the oldest part
of the castle.

I need one of these
on my house.

Nice courtyard

Remains of the abbey

Yes, these are empty
stone coffins. Not sure
where the bodies are.

Nice creepy monument.
This place would be cool
on a dark, stormy night.

He's happy though.

Remains of old buildings
in the back yard!

Goverment building
across the street from
the castle.

Here are a
few pictures of the city.

There are monuments
on top of the surrounding
hills. I think one was
an observatory.

Very old city, but
still growing and
being renewed.
