Based on a coworker's recommendation, I took a day trip to Malham, which is in the Yorkshire Dales (a sort of national-parky kind of place, but not like you would see in the states, since people live there). Malham is the town, Malham cove is the limestone cliff you'll see later. If you go on the loop trail option, there are 3 main attractions over about 6 miles or so. It's a pretty easy walk, and this was a great day for a hike. It was overcast, but warm and calm, and not too crowded. So, here it goes... The first part of the trail went between some farmer's fields, through a forest to a nice little waterfall (Janet's Foss). The forest was REALLY dark, even though there weren't all that many trees. This is why I had to throw out most of my pictures from here. There were a couple of stumps next to the trail that were completely covered with pennies that had been hammered into them. I guess you are supposed to do that while hiking here ;) |

Nice swampy bit |
Not sure if this is terraced on purpose |

Here start the forest |
That's a lot of pennies. |

This was about 10 feet high. |

After the waterfall, the trail heads up to a road, which leads up into Gordale Scar, a cool rocky gorge. At the mouth of the gorge is a private campground, which doubles as a sheep field. Yes, camping and sheep at the same time! Different ideas of camping, I suppose... The gorge was cool, and something I wasn't really expecting to see here. Some people were climbing up further into the gorge, but I thought it best to save my knees for the rest of the hike. |

I'd be pissed if I had paid money and there were sheep right by my tent! |
But no one seemed to mind... |

The way back out of the gorge. |

After the gorge, the route went up over some nice rolling hills, past lots of stone fences, ancient ruins, etc. After a while, it came out next the the Malham Cove limestone pavement, which was on the top of a cliff face. I'd never seen anything quite like it before. It was like a giant's set of blocks or something. The blocks were all fairly loose, wobbling as you walked on them. It was very cool, hence all of the photos. |

These were iron age ruins. |
The low bits on the ground, I mean, not the wall. |
||||
Typical rural road, the walls add excitement when traffic is coming the other way! |

This is limestone pavement from a distance. |

See, blocks and blocks piled up on top of each other. |
|||||
Yes, I was there. |
|||||
Very cool |
Ialmost fell over a few times |
They were very loose. |
|||
Supposed to be slippery when it rains. |
|||||
Long stairway down to the base of the cliff. |
This is the cliff face below the limestone pavement. |
||||
For some reason, it smelled like sheep. |
The cows kept blocking the path. |
||||
Did the cow KNOW it was in water? "Hmm, my feet are cold..." |
