The weather turned a bit on this day, which was OK. It was a relief from the heat! The plan for the day was to check out the National Gallery. They had some rather famous paintings here. It's always fun to see art in person that you have only seen in a textbook before. Some of the highlights for me were paintings by Manet, Monet, Botticelli, daVinci, and Rembrandt. There was also a really cool painting by Hans Holbein the younger from 1533. When you look at the painting head on, you see what appears to be a shapeless blob on the lower part of the painting. It's not until you look at the painting from the side that you see it is actually a skull. Cool use of perspective for that time period... Unfortunately, no photography was allowed inside the gallery, so I don't have anything posted here. I've got a cool book of the collection at home, but that won't help unless you visit ;) I stopped for a few photos walking to the gallery, so here they are... |
