London Day 6 - 1 June 2005

This was the last day of doing stuff in London. Or the last day
of taking pictures, anyway.

On the previous pages, I forgot to mention that I had also
seen a couple of shows. On one night I saw the Producers,
which was hilarious and actually worth the ticket price!

I also saw a play in the reconstructed Shakespeare's Globe
Theatre.

The play was Pericles, and it was presented in a unique way.
Everyone was wearing modern clothes, the bad guys were
gangsters, and half of the cast were acrobats. During the
storm scenes, they were flying around on ropes attached
to the stage and balconies. It was very Cirque deSoleil-esque.
The theatre is supposed to be a fairly accurate reproduction;
you had to pay extra for seat cushions, and the cheap tickets
got you a standing place in the pit. It is larger than the one
in Cedar City (Utah Shakespearean Festival), but very similar.

So, on to day 6. This day was devoted to checking out some
places in the oldest part of London (The City of London).

First was St. Paul's Cathedral, one of the few buildings in this
part of the city to survive the German air raids in WWII. The
current cathedral was built in the late 1600s, but a
church has been on this site since 600 AD.
The interior of the church was very nice, with an outstanding
dome. If you are feeling up to it, you can climb the stairs
all the way to the top of the dome.
There were no pictures allowed inside, but here are a few of the exterior...

After leaving St. Paul's, I walked over to the Museum of
London. On the way, I passed by the monument to the
Great Fire of London (1666). It is located on the same spot
where the fire started.

The Museum of London has tons of exhibits from prehistory
up to the present. There was a great section on Roman
Britain, and some interesting bits on Victorian London.
Unfortunately, no photos allowed again, but their website
is pretty extensive.

So, that about sums it up for the London trip. On my last
day there, I saw Star Wars III and walked around a bit,
but that was it.

I will definitely have to go back to London, since there was
much that I missed. There were several museums I didn't
even touch, and tons of tourist attractions.

So until next time,
