Ripon day out - Oct 2009

I went to Ripon with a group of friends back in October 2009. We were there much of the day, but I only really took pictures inside the cathedral (had to get my money's worth for the photography permit!).

Ripon is a nice little city, and the cathedral is very impressive. While not quite on the scale of Yorkminster, it was still massive, especially considering the size of the community.

The guides inside the cathedral had all sorts of fun facts. Apparently, Lewis Carroll's father worked in this cathedral, and some of the wood and stone carvings were supposed to provide some of the inspiration for the Alice in Wonderland stories. They were kind of funky, so I suppose it's possible!

I thought this was the coolest window. Very fractal.

This was a controversial gateway made by a weaponsmith. Doesn't really fit in..

Cheshire cat?

Unconventional statue of Christ

This wooden hand was controlled by a foot pedal so the organist could direct the choir.

Here's some more Alice inspiration. The first one is a griffin chasing a rabbit down a hole. Then, a monkey?

After the cathedral we wandered around town seeing what type of shops and such were available. Then a wine tasting. w00T!

Very old storefront. The type of store that sells monkey's paws and genie lamps. Or a bookie. I like my version better.

My one people picture of the whole day. Luckily others were taking more (see facebook).
